The Smurfs (French: Les Schtroumpfs; Dutch: De Smurfen) is a beloved Belgian comic franchise featuring a fictional community of small, blue, humanoid creatures who reside in mushroom-shaped houses within a forest setting. Created by Belgian artist Peyo—whose real name is Pierre Culliford—in 1958, these characters originally appeared as part of the comic series titled Les Schtroumpfs. Over time, the franchise has expanded to include more than 100 Smurf characters, each named for adjectives that highlight their distinctive traits—for example, Jokey Smurf, known for his love of practical jokes. The first female Smurf introduced into the series was Smurfette. The Smurfs are recognizable by their iconic Phrygian hats, symbols that have come to represent freedom and independence in modern culture.
